Mark O'Brian
Paper master O’Brian has made some supreme masterpieces out
of just the comical common use of paper and cardboard. He can model and mould the paper he uses to
sculpt these beautiful pieces of art. He has sculpted shoes, cameras and even a
guitar.
I feel pulled to his work because of the beauty of the
materials he uses, how wasteful people can be with them and how useful he can
make them. And you look, and possibly think, I could do that because of the
materials he uses, you feel its easy get and maybe easy to learn but there is a
secret that only he must know. Yeah some other people have tired this subject
matter but it’s how you present it, what materials you use and how your sculpt
it.
I love this type of work because it interests me, fascinates
me, makes me look closer and want to feel the materials they’ve used and why
not? They were rubbish before anyway?
The thing that captures me when I see artwork made from…well..shit,
is the aging, the cracks, the un-pristine look it has and the effect it can
give the object you are making out of it. It can give it an era, an age and can give it an old feel when its brand new.
